Our Story

We are a family owned and operated business located on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, near the majestic Thousand Islands in Ontario Canada. My wife and I have travelled the world and lived/worked on almost every continent, but always looked forward to returning to the River. Our home overlooks the St. Lawrence Seaway, where ships from all over the world sail by our door step. For years we have had a love for maritime history and all things nautical, especially tall ships. One of our favorite pass times is visiting antique boat shows and nautical museums. During our travels abroad, we've spent countless hours at maritime museums, always marvelling at the historic model ship collections on display. Invariably, one of us would say, "Boy! I'd love one of those - Too bad we don't have the time or skills to build one ourselves!"

After hearing that remark so many times, and also investing in a number of expensive kits that never were built, it was decided that what the world needs is a reliable source for professionally-built, top museum quality model wooden ships...ships that would grace any mantel or boardroom.

So, Doran Bay Ships was launched! We've scoured the world to find craftsmen that are able to build, to our exacting specifications, simply the world's finest collection of historic model ships. Each of our ships is a high quality, individual 'work of art' that is made from scratch (i.e. not kits) using only the finest materials.

However, we recognize that everyone has a budget and depending on where the ship is intended to be viewed, not every application requires quite the same level finish or detail. So we categorize our ships according to different levels of 'fit and finish'. Our 'Silver' series models are very impressive for most homes or offices. Our 'Gold' series models offer more decking and rigging detail. Our 'Platinum' series ships offer museum curators and private collectors the highest level of carvings and finish. Visit our Gallery to see our collection of over 70 different model ships from around the world. Many of these ships are offered in different sizes/scales and in the different qualities.

Keep visiting us as we expand our offerings to include even more Canadian and US ships in the near future. We will be offering an exclusive line of famous 'Great Lake' models, including Revolutionary War and War of 1812 gunships, schooners, steamers and modern day "Upper Lakers'.
